July 14, Colombo: A local poll observer in Sri Lanka says that foreign observers from Commonwealth and Asian countries would monitor the forthcoming provincial council elections.
Executive Director of People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), Rohana Hettiarachchi said election monitors from Commonwealth countries would monitor the Northern Provincial Council polls.
He said that monitors from SAARC and other Asian countries will monitor the polls for the Central and North-Western Provinces while Commonwealth polls observers would monitor the Northern Provincial Council polls since the PC elections are being held there for the first time in 25 years.
According to Hettiarachchi, PAFFREL has already discussed with the Thailand-based Asian Network for Free and Fair Elections and also monitors in Korea and Philippines for the Central and North Western Provinces.
PAFFREL has also organized election monitoring programs and a voter-education programme in all the Districts in the Northern Province.
Meanwhile, the Election Secretariat said a special two day discussion with regarding the election will begin on Tuesday in Colombo with the participation of District secretaries and Assistant Election Commissioners of the relevant provinces.
