Kegalle High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundera yesterday sentenced Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman K. G. Piyatissa (UPFA/SLFP - Ruling Party in Sri Lanka) to death for killing Kudararalage Kapila Priyantha Padmakumara (32) at Belimulwatte, Mawanella on February 12, 2003.

The Court was told how Piyatissa, dressed as a Muslim woman, had arrived at the victim’s residence along with four others and opened fire at Padmakumara without any provocation.

The victim’s younger sister, K. R. Gayani Kumari Rupika, said that of the five persons, who had come in a white van, three were dressed as Muslim women covering their faces. All of them had carried weapons, the eyewitness said, adding that during the firing somehow Piyatissa had removed his face cover. She said when they inquired why he was attacking them he hadn’t responded.
