Sri Lanka's development programs will not be overturned by adverse elements - President

Apr 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today asserted that the government's programme to develop rural areas for the benefit of people after eradicating 30 years of terrorism will not be overturned in the face of adverse elements that are trying to disrupt the government's massive development programs.
Speaking at a ceremony held this morning at the Galgamuwa Public Esplanade to vest the developed Padeniya - Anuradhapura road in the North Central Province with the public, the President requested the public to unite and step into develop the country by protecting the Sri Lankan identity.


the Ministry of Ports and Highways widened and reconstructed the 80-kilometre stretch of Padeniya - Anuradhapura road, which was under a dilapidated condition for decades, at a cost of Rs.7 billion with the grant assistance from Korea. The President also pointed out the need to increase the speed limits on the roads in line with the rapid road development.
He noted that people who import modern vehicles thank the government for improving the road conditions but lament that the police take action against them on exceeding speed limits.
The President said the laws passed for the old roads should be amended.
The President also said that building pavements (sidewalks) for pedestrians would me made compulsory in future.
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Jongmoon Choi, Ministers and parliamentarians participated in the occasion.
