Punjabi film Sadda Haq, released worldwide on Friday, faced a setback at home when the Haryana government and the Chandigarh administration banned its screening.

Punjab had already banned the controversial film on Thursday. A miffed producer-actor Kuljinder Sidhu has decided to move court to get the ban revoked.

"It's a black day in the country's democracy. It's unfair that a few bureaucrats watched the film and decided to impose a ban," Sidhu said. "I tried to seek an appointment with Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to impress upon him that the decision was unjustified, but in vain."

Sidhu said the ban was arbitrary because the censor board had cleared the film with a U/A certificate.

Sources in the Punjab government said Sadda Haq was banned because a committee headed by the chief secretary that watched the film felt it could disturb peace in the state.

The film portrays militancy in Punjab and its promotional song, 'Baghi' (rebel), apparently equates Guru Gobind Singh and freedom fighters with militants Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh Rajoana.

Sidhu, however, contended, "People could watch films based on the Naxalite movement and dacoits, but a film drawing its theme from militancy is banned. That shows the government's bias towards minorities." The movie is reportedly getting a good response in other countries.
