Kalmunai: A hartal was observed in Muslim dominated areas of the Eastern Province yesterday (25) to protest against the alleged anti-Muslim stance taken by the Bodu Bala Sena.
All shops and government offices in Batticaloa, Kattankudy, Kalmunai, Nintavur, Addalaichenai, Akkaraipattu and Pottivil remained closed and the transport in those areas came to a standstill. The organization for Muslim rights called for the hartal.
Meanwhile, Muslims in thpse areas have been discouraged from attending the Deyata Kirula fearing that some anti-Muslim elements may create trouble over the dress of Muslim women.
The first term test that were due to commence in most schools in those areas yesterday were postponed as most of the children were absent.
Security forces and police were deployed on the main road from Akkaraipattu to Batticaloa to prevent any incidents.
However, two SLTB buses plying empty in the Addalachchenai area were stoned, but there were no serious damages to the vehicles.
