Mar 22, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government's failure to fulfill the commitments it made to the international community after the end of the war has led to the United Nations Human Rights Council adopting another resolution and Sri Lanka will face severe consequences if the government continues to fail, Sri Lanka's main Tamil party warned.
Speaking to the BBC Sinhala Service, the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said at least now the government must take measures to fulfill the promises it gave to the UN during the visit of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon just after the war in May 2009 and at the UNHRC session in Geneva in the same month.

The MP pointed out that the government promised the UN to investigate alleged human rights violations committed by the security forces during the finals stages of the war, resettle all the Internally Displaced Persons and to formulate a political solution to the ethnic issue.
"None of those promises have been fulfilled," Sumanthiran said.
The TNA requested the government to at least now cooperate with the international community and implement the promises it made to the UN.
