July 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena says that his Ministry will take stern disciplinary stern actions against teachers who do not accept transfer orders.
Addressing a meeting held at the Homagama Divisional Secretariat, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena today said a female teacher of the most respected school in the island staging a protest on a roof top of a school building sets a bad example to the teacher service.
Explaining that a teacher who has completed 8 years of service in one school in Colombo has been transferred to a near-by school according to a systematic transfer policy, the Minister said staging a protest on a roof top cannot be expected from a female teacher in whatsoever manner.
The Minister ordered the officials to take strong disciplinary action against the errant teacher.
The Education sector trade union Ceylon Teachers' Association General Secretary Joseph Stalin however, said the transfer was not according to the national Teacher Transfer Policy and resulted in this type of protest.
The Principal of the school Upali Gunasekera told the media that the Education Ministry every year requests the names of additional teachers eligible for transfer and the school hands over a list of names. He said the Ministry has accordingly decided on the transfer
