Indian media reported that the Sri Lankan monk identified as Bandara, who was part of a group of Sri Lankan pilgrims, was attacked at the Central railway station. The group of pilgrims has arrived in Chennai on the way back home after visiting various Buddhist sites including Gaya.
The latest attack comes days after another Buddhist monk was attacked by pro-LTTE Tamils in Tanjavur. The monk, who was pursuing an archeological degree in New Delhi, was visiting an archeological site in Tamil Nadu as part of a study tour when he was attacked.
The Tamil Nadu police had said the Buddhist priest was repeatedly assaulted by unidentified attackers and the police had launched a search to arrest them.
The police had arrested 12 pro-LTTE activists suspected of attacking the monk in Tanjavur.
Tamil Nadu Tamil political parties are accused of stirring sentiments among the pro-LTTE Tamils who are calling for a separate state in Sri Lanka and pressuring the central Indian government to vote against Sri Lanka for a US-sponsored resolution.
