July 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the household income in the country has declined under the Mahinda Chintana policies since 2006.
UNP parliamentarian and Economist Dr. Harsha de Silva told a news conference today that there was no truth in the statements made by the Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Sarath Amunugama and the Rajapaksas that the economy is rapidly growing, gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita income are increasing, and inflation is decreasing.
He explained that the household income has actually declined from the time the Mahinda Chintana policy was implemented when the ruling government assumed office.
Dr. De Silva made these comments referring to the data from the preliminary result of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey released by the Department of Census and Statistics.
"The progress in the household economy reflects on the country's development," he observed.
Dr. De Silva pointed out that the "nominal" value is useless as Rs 100 today cannot be compared with Rs 100 last year due to the increase in prices of goods as the purchasing power has diminished.
"The so called miracle does not exist," he said.
