July 09, 2013 (LBO) - Russian investors are looking at Sri Lanka's fisheries, agriculture and port industries in Trincomalee, a country's senior envoy had said in Colombo, a business association said.
The Sri Lanka - Russia business council of the Ceylon Chamber quoted counselor of Russian Federation, Evgeni Sergienko, as saying at their annual general meeting that, an draft intergovernmental agreement on fisheries cooperation in the final stage. Establishment of an intergovernmental commission on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation to promote traditional Russian high-tech equipment and Sri Lankan agricultural products is also in the pipeline the statement said. "There was a good opportunity to gain a foothold for the Russian business through taking part in joint projects," Sergienko is quoted as saying in the statement. Russian companies were also in talks with Sri Lanka Gateway Industries, which is planning investments by Trincomalee port, the statement said. Another Russian entity the Association of Builders of Russia were interested in large large-scale construction of residential and social facilities in the Northern region.
