Train services to Jaffna would be restored before the end of this year, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said yesterday, adding that the primary stage of putting the ‘Yal Devi’ back on track to the North was nearing completion and he was confident that within the next two months, the Railways Department would be able to operate the train first to Killinochchi and then Jaffna.
Minister Welgama said that an Indian company had undertaken the contract to develop railway services in the North. But, to operate ‘Yal Devi’ many companies had come forward to help the SLR. Some private sector organisations had expressed their willingness to construct all the railway stations in the North, and were doing so under the directions of the Railways Department.
Minister Welgama pointed out that the kind gesture by the private companies, should be appreciated.
