July 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms will hand over 'Ehelepola Walawwa' mansion, which has been used as Bogambara High Security Prison for nearly 195 years, to the President on 13th July.
Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera yesterday paid an observation tour to the Ehelepola Walawwa mansion prior to the handing over.
In 1825, Ehelepola Maha Nilame, a Sinhala elite class official, who was supporting the British colonial rule after the capture of the Sinhala Kingdom, was exiled to Mauritius Island. He died there on April 5, 1829 at the age of 56.
The historic mansion is expected to be restored and used in a commercially viable project.
The government has taken steps to remove the prisons from the city centers and a new prison complex has been constructed in Pallekele to house the prisoners evacuated from Bogambara.
Prisoners from the overcrowded maximum-security prison, which is situated on a 13-acre land in the center of the busy city, will be moved to the new prison complex built in Pallekele at a cost of 1.93 billion rupees.
