June 27, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to brief the international diplomatic community in the country on the proposed revisions to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Sri Lanka's Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris met the foreign diplomats in Sri Lanka at his Ministry Wednesday and explained the provincial council system in the country and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which introduced the provincial council system under the 1987 Indo-Lanka Accord.
Addressing the Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Sri Lanka, Minister Peiris emphasized that the best option to address the issues related to the constitutional amendments is the parliamentary select committee and it will give a broad opportunity to deliberate at length with regard to the 13th Amendment.
The Minister noted that a complete study needs to be conducted before the Constitutional Amendment is moved in Parliament.
Minister Peiris also briefed the diplomats on government's arrangements to hold the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in November.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga updated the diplomats on the progress made so far on the implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commissio
