June 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka for the first time in the history of the judiciary has used the Global Positioning System (GPS) Technology to consolidate evidence, the government said.
According to a government report, the Colombo High Court Judge P. Surasena has granted the law enforcement authorities permission to use GPS data to verify the location of an arrest of five Indians in the seas.
Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 5 Indian nationals in the northern sea when they were smuggling narcotics into the island.
The counsel appearing on behalf of the defendants has claimed that the Indians were arrested within Indian territorial waters and therefore they cannot be prosecuted in a Sri Lankan Court.
Accordingly the Court has granted permission to determine whether the suspects were nabbed in the Indian or Sri Lankan territorial waters as requested by the State Counsel.
