Feb 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says that the law has been violated in granting bail to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena's son who is accused of assaulting the son of a senior police officer.
UNP Spokesperson, parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka has said that granting police bail to Sirisena's son is a violation of the Criminal Procedure (Special Provisions) Act.

Explaining that under the newly passed legislation the police are able to detain a suspect arrested without a warrant for 48 hours before producing the person before court, Karunathilaka said the police had violated the law in granting bail to the Minister's son.
"How did the police grant bail to Sirisena's son even without presenting him in court?" Karunathilaka questioned.
He has added that the rule of law is applied in a different manner to members of the governing party and VIPs.
