Kotelawala Defence Uni opens its doors to civilians

Gen Sir John Kotelawala Defence University has decided to open its doors to civilian students to apply for its degree courses other than medical and surgical sciences, Vice Chancellor of the university Maj. Gen. Milinda Peiris said.

Addressing a press conference held at the university premises on Sunday, Maj. Gen. Peiris said that the KDU was the only university offering graduate courses in defence studies in the South Asian region.

"Now we offer the opportunity for civilians to come and obtain a world recognised degrees without being enlisted in tri-forces or the police. We are opening six of the seven faculties to civilian students. The Medical faculty will remain only for security personnel. The civilian students could enroll in any of the 19 courses offered by the faculties of Defence and Strategic Studies, Engineering, Law, Management, Social Sciences and Humanities and Graduate Studies, Allied Health Sciences.

Applications have now been called from the tri forces and police for the courses to be conducted the in academic year 2014 and the closing date would be March 15, 2013.

Dean of the Medical Faculty Prof. T.R. Weerasuriya, Dean of the Law Faculty Dr Prathibha Mahanamahewa, Dean (Research and Development) Prof Asoka Karunananda, Dean, Graduate Studies Brig Nishantha Wadugodapitiya, Dean, Allied Health Sciences Dr Col Thamahi Makuloluwa briefed the press.
