May 26, Colombo: A group of Buddhist monks belong to an organization called Sihala Ravaya has staged a march to protest a decision taken by the authorities to send the body of self-immolated monk to Ratnapura.
The monks have started the march from the funeral parlor in Borella towards the Temple Trees to protest government's decision to send the body of Bowatte Indraratana Thera to his home town in Ratnapura.
The police anti-riot squad, armed with water cannons, has been called and the main artery, Galle road, has been closed for traffic from Kollupitiya junction to Galle Face, local media reported.
Bowatte Indraratana Thera, who is also a member of the organization, died Saturday from the burns he suffered when he set himself on fire to protest the slaughter of cattle in the country.
The monk doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze near the entrance to the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of Tooth) in Kandy on the Vesak Poya Day, the holiest day for the Buddhists.
The monk, who has been a member of the Buddhist nationalist party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) before joining the Sihala Ravaya, is reportedly a fervent animal right activist and has worked relentlessly to stop slaughtering cattle.
